Robert-Charles Vallance started making wigs as child, fascinated by the women in his neighborhood who wore hairpieces.
These days, his clients at The Broadway Wig Company
include the likes of actresses Dame Judi Dench and Patti Lupone, who hails him as “the king.”
Vallance, whose first job was making period wigs for a production of the musical “1776,” charges $1,000 to $3,000 for his creations, which can take hundreds of hours of painstaking stitching, whether using synthetic or real hair.
He recently produced wigs for the Broadway drama “Lucky Guy,” which starred Tom Hanks and marked the last major work by writer Nora Ephron. While most his creations are built for the stage, Vallance also is behind Angels of New York
, which makes wigs for cancer patients.
