Authorities temporarily shut seven ball fields in Red Hook amid findings of elevated lead levels in the soil. Meanwhile, an adjacent track remains open.
The fields, which ordinarily draw throngs of baseball and soccer players, were built on a site that housed smelting companies from the 1920s to the 1940s. Environmental officials, who are working on a plan to decontaminate the parkland, plan to hold a public meeting on the issue this summer.
