QUEENS – Members of the Muslim community gathered in Jamaica Hills to remember a 60-year-old mother of three slain in what some suspect was a murder motivated by hate.
Nazma Khanam was walking home from work with her husband along Normal Road Wednesday night when an attacker stabbed her to death. Her asthmatic husband, who had stopped behind her to catch his breath, rushed to her side after hearing his wife’s cries for help.
Her last words reportedly were, “Somebody killed me.”
Khanam’s death followed the murders last month of an imam and his friend who were gunned down in Ozone Park. A suspect has been charged in that case. While police have yet to determine a motive, many believe the Muslim men were victims of a hate crime.
