That’s the number of people killed by a New York subway train since the beginning of October.
The deaths, which include suicides, accidents and one highly publicized murder, spurred members of the MTA board to propose glass doors on subway platforms to prevent passengers from falling onto the tracks.
Charles Moerdler, an MTA board member, has called for safety doors for several years. But for the first time, the MTA is working on a pilot program to test the idea – for the 42nd Street Shuttle.
The MTA board still needs to formally accept the proposal. And any improved safety measures would take years to implement.
Until then, New Yorkers will just have be cautious and stand clear.
