BROOKLYN —
Nestled between a Sprint store and a McDonald’s in the heart of Bedford-Stuyvesant sits Charlie’s Calypso City. This is where Rawlston Charles, an immigrant from Trinidad and Tobago, helped launch a global resurgence of calypso.
The store has been a neighborhood staple since 1972. Charlie’s Records, a new documentary directed by his daughter Tina, the New York Liberty WNBA star, tells the story of his influence on New York’s music scene.
