BROOKLYN —
No one knows exactly how many speakers of Indigenous Mesoamerican languages live in Sunset Park.
The Mixteca Organization, which serves the Central American community, is trying to reach as many of them as possible.
Mixteca has been doing census and COVID-19 outreach in English, Spanish and four Indigenous Mesoamerican languages: Tu’u Savi, Ki’iche, Nahuatl and Mixe.
Executive director Lorena Kourousais said she and her team have been working around the clock to make sure the area has an accurate count: “The only thing I don’t do in Sunset Park is sleep.”
