For decades, the Yurok and Karuk tribes have been demanding the removal of dams on the Klamath River in California and Oregon.
The river plays a critical role in tribal culture and the tribes have long relied on its salmon for food.
When the PacifiCorp power company stalled the progress of the dams’ removal because of a federal decision, activists again protested and voiced their dissent. The two states responded by saying they would contribute additional resources to the removal deal, giving the project renewed life.
