More than 1,500 students were restrained by NYPD school safety agents from the first quarter of 2019 through the first quarter of 2020 in incidents that played out along stark racial lines, data shows.
Nearly 90 percent of the children restrained were students of color, a proportion that is higher than their representation in the overall school population.
Students can be legally restrained for reasons including being charged with a crime, school disciplinary intervention for offenses like fighting and child-in-crisis incidents. And the schools with the most child-in-crisis incidents are those with few white students.
