The waiting lists to get into the Mosholu Montefiore Community Center after-school programs topped 400 as of late last month.
There aren’t enough part-time workers to staff 34 of its 36 after-school locations. At full capacity, its after-school programs can serve up to 5,000 students.
The center’s staffing challenges aren’t unique.
As families across the country scramble to find ways to keep their children safe while they return to work, Congress remains divided on whether there’s a place in President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better plan for robust child-care support.
