“RuPaul’s Drag Race” took more than a decade to crown its first trans queen.
Maybe the long-running VH1 series should have been paying more attention to Brooklyn, where trans and nonbinary performers thrive.
“Spaces in Brooklyn are more open to all types of drag,” says dancer Bobby LeMaire. “You can do whatever—as long as you can give a show.”
