New Yorkers of all ages and backgrounds marked International Women’s Day with a march from Washington Square Park to Union Square Park on March 8. The event featured speakers from women and queer organizations and emphasized renewed calls for equality.
This year’s motto, “Unite and Resist,” calls on participants to continue fighting within their communities to push against what they describe as “fascism and the takeover of our freedoms.”
The Women’s March was started in 2017 following the first election of President Donald Trump, and organized the largest single day protest in American history.
International Women’s Day is a global holiday which has been celebrated since 1911 in honor of women’s achievements and to call for gender equity. In the U.S., March is Women’s History Month and has been celebrated annually since 1987.
