NEW YORK CITY —
Outdoor dining was a lifeline for many restaurants in New York during the pandemic. Now, the city is making the popular program permanent, but with some caveats for restaurant owners.
To rein in sidewalk and roadway sheds, the city has proposed a set of rules governing outdoor dining—creating some uniformity and minimum standards for restaurants to follow.
The new program, called Dining Out NYC, will be supervised by the Department of Transportation, and will expand sidewalk dining to all boroughs year round. It will also allow dining in the roadways from April through November.
